Nextones Festival 2024 is around the corner

This year’s Nextones Festival at the Tones Teatro Natura and the Orridi di Uriezzo, two spectacular sites in Northern Italy, is around the corner. On the line-up are international artists like Lucy Railton, Aïsha Devi, Lanark Artefax, Objekt, Alessandro Cortini, Marie Davidson, and Robert Hood, among others, and we literally can’t wait.

After enjoying ourselves at festivals in Switzerland—most notably Bad Bonn and B-Sides—we are now dipping our toes into the international festival scene (as indicated in yesterday’s post regarding Dekmantel).

In the northernmost part of the Italian region of Piedmont, the Tones Teatro Natura and the Orridi di Uriezzo provide a spectacular backdrop for the Nextones Festival. Conceived by Threes Productions, the team behind the cutting-edge Milano-based Terraforma Festival, this boutique event hosts a fine selection of international artists from July 18 to 21, 2024. The concerts and DJ sets are complemented by soundwalks, live radio broadcasts, performances, hikes, and workshops.

The festival kicks off with British cellist Lucy Railton, who caught our attention through her collaborations with pioneers like Peter Zinovieff and Russell Haswell [see zweikommasieben #17], as well as boundary-pushing contemporaries like Beatrice Dillon [see zweikommasieben #11] and Laurel Halo [see zweikommasieben #3 and #16]. The musician and curator, who has released music on Modern Love, the Shelter Press/Editions Mego-imperium, and PAN, among others, will perform on Thursday at the Orridi di Uriezzo—breathtaking gorges formed by the melting of the Toce glacier thousands of years ago.

Friday marks the first day at the Tones Teatro Natura, located at a former quarry north of the secluded town of Oira. Among others, Houndstooth-signed rave MC Aïsha Devi [see zweikommasieben #13] and Scottish hybrid-club crackerjack Lanark Artefax will present live AV shows, before dancefloor experimentalists Objekt and CCL close the night with a b2b DJ set.

Saturday features Mute-signed Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini [see zweikommasieben #17] and Marco Ciceri taking the stage with another AV show, followed by sets by tongue-in-cheek wave-electro-boss Marie Davidson, Underground Resistance co-founder Robert Hood, and DJ Cashu from São Paulo’s queer electronic music scene.

Last year’s edition was a wild ride within stunning scenery, and we can’t wait for this year’s event. See you there—ciao!
