Just like the first nine editions, Rewire Festival 2022 will take place in more than ten different locations in The Hague: clubs, churches, theaters, off-spaces, and cinemas provide the backdrop for an extensive program that focuses on legacy acts and contemporary artists alike.
The press release for the festival excitingly states the anticipation “of presenting an edition with an authentic city festival dynamic in The Hague, including standing crowds.” I, personally, got to appreciate seated concerts more and more over the last few years, but I’ll bite in this case, considering people might also want to dance a little here and there. And on paper, the line-up, which consists of a few specifically commissioned works as well, certainly allows for both: introspective moments as well as the opportunity to let loose. You can embrace the former, for example, while listening to Meredith Monk who will present two works together with her Vocal Ensemble and Bang on a Can All-Stars, Stine Janvin [see zweikommasieben #21] and Ula Sickle, Grouper, or Coby Sey. Debonair, Scratcha DVA, The Bug, performing together with Dis Fig, Flowdan, and Manga Saint Hilare, or Slikback and Weirdcore, who will be world premiering a collaborative project titled “Void”, will provide the right context for the latter.
Next to that, many other things are happening over the course of four days in the Dutch coastal town: installations, talks, and screenings add to an extensive program, which also features a lot of zweikommasieben favorites like Eartheater [see zweikommasieben #18], Caterina Barbieri [see zweikommasieben #19], Evian Christ [see zweikommasieben #3], aya [see zweikommasieben #20], Nkisi [see zweikommasieben #21], or Helm [see zweikommasieben #13].
As a preparation for the festival, which takes place from April 7 to April 10, we equipped our (almost) weekly playlist exclusively with works by artists who will be performing at Rewire. In 30 tracks, you should get a good idea and a convenient jumping off point for further research. See where it takes you and see you in The Hague in April.
Rewire’s full line up and timetable can be found on their homepage. The expansive discourse program, which circles around the three key themes “Noise”, “Affect”, and “Ritual” is online now as well, so get your markers out.
