Ambient Park, 2017_2019
Félicia Atkinson
Since the early 2000s, Félicia Atkinson has been releasing music on her own and in various artistic constellations. The French musician, writer, and visual artist has produced stripped-down folk songs, miniature tracks full of longing, and abstract sound collages under her legal name and the moniker Je Suis Le Petit Chevalier as well as in collaboration with Christina Vantzou, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Brian Pyle aka Ensemble Economique, and Peter Broderick. Taking everyday life as the quarry for her art, which spans music, sound art, installations, text publications, sculptures, drawings, and paintings, Atkinson uses lyrical abstraction to transform the seemingly mundane into something revelatory. Since 2012, the majority of her work has been published with Shelter Press, the publishing house she runs together with her partner Bartolomé Sanson.
In her contribution for zweikommasieben, Atkinson offers a series of five collages entitled Ambient Park, 2017_2019, which can be understood as an extension of the sold-out print run of Ambient Park [Shelter Press, 2017]. Atkinson extends the source material through minimal intrusions—the former in this case being photographs of a desert landscape, the latter broad lines in wax paint. The resulting composition seems coincidental, yet calmly poetic at the same time.
